Home(care) is Where My Heart is: An Immigrant Student's Journey to Starting Her Own Homecare Agency - Helga Zeneli, CBA '24

From as early as I can remember, I have held the conviction that all my ambitions would be realized with unwavering confidence and steadfast dedication. Though my plans have not always followed a straight line, ups and downs and all, that sure feeling has remained consistent. Throughout the years, I have allowed this conviction to guide me throughout my academic and professional careers.

As I enter my senior year at the University of Pittsburgh, my excitement for the future grows stronger. With a pursuit in finance and marketing, complemented by a minor in economics, I hope to enhance the skills that will help me advance my stance in the business world. In 2015, my family and I moved to Philadelphia from Athens, Greece. As this was my parents' second immigration, first from Albania, adjusting to life in the United States was extremely difficult. The language barrier was ever-present and cultural shocks became an everyday endeavor. However, they have always encouraged entrepreneurship and were set on creating a brighter life. Their businesses have flourished since then, a token of their hard work and constant efforts.

In 2018, inspired by my dear grandparents and parents, I decided to undertake the seemingly risky idea of opening a business. I am the proud co-founder of Health & Happiness Homecare, a non-medical homecare agency that serves the Greater Philadelphia area. We currently serve the areas of Philadelphia, Montgomery County, Bucks County, Chester County, and Delaware County. Our caregivers create and uphold detailed plans of care for our clients, so they can enjoy their lives and uphold their dignity to the fullest. The agency helps individuals in need to qualify for the care that they require at absolutely zero cost. This work has led to some of the most rewarding memories of my life as I have deeply connected with my clients and other professionals throughout the state.

As I reflect back to the early days of the venture, it would be a lie to say that I was not doubtful of my ability to succeed. In my senior year of high school, I printed thousands of documents (gathering quite a few odd looks from the librarians) and studied them endlessly after-school. The pandemic further halted my high spirits as business slowed down greatly. I have always thought of myself as optimistic, so I did not let such hurdles hinder my commitment. Currently, the agency stands as a seven-figure business and we are continuously growing its clientele every day. This truly would not have been possible without the encouragement of my loved ones. As my confidence faltered, they constantly reminded me that life can not be lived without risks.

My studies and experiences at the University of Pittsburgh have lent invaluable knowledge that has shaped me professionally. Throughout my time at the school, I have been a Resident Assistant for both general Residence Life and the Pitt Business living learning community. The relationships I've built with my residents and co-workers remain close to my heart. Residence Life became an indispensable network of high-achieving and bright peers. I have served on the e-board and become a member of a variety of organizations. Clubs such as Alpha Kappa Psi and Women in Economics grew my confidence and cemented my professional abilities.

Throughout my time within these organizations, I participated in hundreds of workshops and skill-building courses. Activities such as resume/cover letter editing, interview preparation, public speaking tips, leadership seminars, etc. have helped me build solid foundational skills for my career. I utilize these key principles in the day-to-day of my business as I interact with my employees, potential hires, and clients. The expertise that I gained through these projects has been crucial to my personal development.

If you are looking to start your own business, whatever ideas you may have, take them into your hands and make them tangible. Start small, but do not hesitate to think BIG! Some risks are worth taking and, as cliche as it sounds, you will not know until you try. Be confident and steadfast in your decisions and trust your gut. When you go into your ideas with a self-assured mindset, they suddenly become a *little* more achievable.

I often had trouble continuing a hobby or project if I was not immediately perfect at it. However, actual progress takes time and commitment. You will make mistakes, but there is always the opportunity for growth. Do not be selfish; if you cup your hand, you will always have more water than if you clench your fist.

As I look into the future, I hope to further grow Health & Happiness Homecare’s clientele and increase our social media presence. I am currently learning more about website editing, SEO, optimizing search engines, etc. Our plan is to open another location in order to assist more individuals in need. We are committed to scaling the company and becoming a trusted source for people that require our services. I am beyond eager to explore the possibilities that lie ahead. One thing is for sure, I am only moving upward and forward.
