The University of Pittsburgh Innovation Institute reported that Pitt Innovators were issued 8 U.S. patents in February 2017.

Featured Patents

US 9,561,497 "Non-Noble Metal Based Electro-Catalyst Compositions for Proton Exchange Membrane Based Water Electrolysis and Methods of Making"

Prashant Kumta, the Edward R. Weidlein Chair Professor at Swanson School of Engineering and School of Dental Medicine and his colleagues Moni Datta, engineering research assistant professor, and research assistant Karan Kadakia, research assistant professor Oleg Velikokhatnyi and doctoral student Prashanth Hanumantha, have developed electro-catalyst compositions including a combination of noble metal and non-noble metal oxides for proton exchange membrane-based water electrolysis, and methods of preparing the electro-catalyst compositions and forming electrodes therefrom. For more information on this technology, contact Janice Panza.

US 9,562,066 "Oral Therapy of Necrotizing Enterocolitis"

David Hackam, former professor of surgery, cell biology and physiology, developed a method of reducing the risk of necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC), which is the leading cause of death from gastrointestinal disease in neonatal children, through the oral delivery of a compound, CpG-ODN. The most recent patent adds to an expanding portfolio of patents at Pitt for treating NEC. For more information on this technology, contact Maria Vanegas.
