The University of Pittsburgh announced that Pitt innovators were issued 6 U.S. patents in September 2021.
Featured Patent: 11,129,846 “Method of Treating Severe Asthma”
Severe asthma accounts for 5-10 percent of asthma sufferers, but consumes up to 50 percent of asthma-related healthcare costs of $28 billion per year. Corticosteroids, a mainstay of asthma therapy, are ineffective at treating severe asthma, leading to more frequent emergency care and hospitalization. The innovators have shown that expression of IFN-y is significantly reduced in IRF5-deficient mice. An intervention to block IRF5 function in the lungs of severe asthmatics is therefore a promising new therapeutic modality by preventing airway hyperactivity.
